Caribbean Island Hopping
If you are looking to book a honeymoon in 2012, or simply wish to indulge in a romantic break, the Caribbean is the perfect destination. Palm trees sway in the breeze, the sea is invitingly blue and there is also an individual character to each of the islands just waiting to be explored. Why not try some island hopping to uncover what the magic is really about?
Antigua was formerly appointed as a British naval base in the 18th century and today its coral reefs and safe natural harbours are a big draw for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts. The adventurous can try out a range of water sports while couples looking for some pampering can enjoy spa treatments from massages to body wraps.
If you are interested in the history of the isle, head to the capital city St John’s, where fine colonial buildings line the streets and there is a local market.
Beautiful resorts and hotels are available to make your stay complete.
Not far away, St Kitts is a lush isle which played a vital role in the sugar trade. Forests are nurtured by the climate here and you can go for a gentle hike or just soak up the luxury on one of the beautiful white sand beaches in the south of the island close to Frigate Bay.
Christopher Columbus was so captured by the beauty and shape of St Kitts that he chose to name it after the patron saint of travellers – St. Christopher – a label which was later shortened to its current form.
Blending a mix of British, African, Spanish and Asian roots, Jamaica is an intriguing isle with a laidback attitude. Dance is a major part of the culture in Jamaica, whether there is a local celebration, worship or a social gathering. New styles evolve and emerge throughout the year, and you can watch or get involved at the clubs. The cuisine is also diverse, representing the varied nationalities, with dishes including pepper shrimps and even Goat Head Soup!
Barbados is another Caribbean retreat, a paradise formed by volcanic activity where underground rivers, lakes and caves supply drinking water to the island. This is a place where cars are found alongside donkey carts and there is a sense of modernity but also of the traditional. A myriad of restaurants and bars provide excellent entertainment in the south while there is nothing like going to watch a cricket match at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown. Nicknamed ‘Little England’, you can escape inside your resort or venture further in Barbados.
No matter where you choose to go, island hopping in the Caribbean is an incredibly romantic experience whether you want to get active or sunbathe all day long.
